After reportedly ditching 5G modems for not being able to perfect it, the US tech giant is now strategically working on in-house 6G modems with the expectation of a tighter integration for its range of future devices. The company is currently dependent on Qualcomm for silicone, Bloomberg reports.
Mark Gurman claims that the American phone maker has been at 6G modem since 2021. It’s certain that 6G won’t be a commercial reality until 2030 at least so that gives Apple abundant time to research and develop, test, and finalize its home-brewed 6G technology. The company hopes to become self-reliant on the next generation of technology and have more say on how optimization works with its devices. Given that 6G will rule the future decades, Apple will want to stamp its clout earlier than its competitors.
The in-house 6G modems will let Apple better optimize the performance of its future iPhones, tablets, and other devices.

In-house 6G modems are one thing Apple will want to create
Apple has made chipsets for iPhones, Mac computers, and Apple Watches. It has brilliantly smooth iOS software, but the modem has been a missing component so far. The company has a $30 billion R&D budget and the world’s greatest phone maker has all the good reasons for working on a 6G modem.
Given that Apple has renewed its cooperation with Qualcomm until 2026, it will continue to provide 5G modems till the same date. After that, Apple may have its own momentum for self-reliance. Also read: China Achieves 6G Speed Breakthrough, Tops 206.25 Gbps
