Cellnex, a leading European telecommunications gear manufacturer, has reached an agreement with Urban Service Point (USP) to deploy 5G small cells in news kiosks in Spain. The miniature base stations will be deployed in areas with a larger popular density to meet the high demand for data consumption.
The company will install the 5G small cells in newspaper stands in Barcelona, Spain. For the unversed, 5G small cells are the network extender which works like 5G but uses a small base station. This technology uses a miniature radio access point (AP) or wireless network base station with low radio frequency (RF). These help extend and maintain carrier network coverage further. Unlike tall towers, these small cells are attached to buildings, streetlights, and sign boards. The size of the cells itself gave it the moniker small cells.
Cellnex will use these small 5G cells in bus shelters, street lights, traffic lights, and signs.

Cellnex and USP to extend 5G small cells deployment across Spain
Starting with news kiosks in Barcelona, both Cellnex and USP seek to extend the 5G small cell deployment to other cities in Spain. USP has over 300 newsstands in various cities in the country.
Cellnex notes that the small 5G cells help extend network capacity and coverage and play an important role in proliferating the technology in largely populated areas.
Luis Sancho, director and co-founder of Urban Service Point, said: “The newspaper stand serves citizens and cities. It cannot be imagined in any other way. It has always been like this and it must be the common denominator of all the projects that are betting on its transformation. We are very grateful for Cellnex’s commitment to the transformation model of the newspaper stand sector. This agreement will position newspaper stands as a principal network for the deployment of small cells, helping city councils to advance toward smart cities capabilities and providing an essential service for citizens.”

“We are very grateful to USP for their flexibility and cooperation. As we seek solutions to help our clients, mobile operators, to densify mobile coverage in urban areas, we will continue to forge similar alliances throughout the territory,” said Jordi Sanchís, director of assets and infrastructure at Cellnex Spain.
Cellnex operates about 135,000 sites in many European states including but not limited to Spain, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Italy, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, etc.
