Spain to connect 1 million rural households with 300 Mbps internet

Spain government wants to bring 1 million rural-based homes with 300 Mbps fiber internet with subsidy under the latest edition of the UNICO-Broadband program. The initiative will connect the previously unconnected areas and seeks to enhance communication across the country which can be extended to 1 Gbps speed.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, says that the program: “is a call for aid aimed at telecommunications operators and whose objective is the deployment of very high-speed broadband infrastructures, capable of providing services at symmetrical speeds of at least 300 Mbps, scalable to 1 Gbps.”

The program brings connection to rural areas that so far operators have had no plans to reach. It’s the third phase of the UNICO-Broadband program.

In the last two editions, the objective was to launch a 100 Mbps symmetric expandable. So far, 89.50% of households in rural areas have been connected with the said speed connectivity. The latest plan is to up the speed to 300 Mbps which is further expandable to 1 Gbps to all citizens by 2025 for all in rural and urban areas. In the latter, 95.75% of residents have access to high-speed 300 Mbps fiber internet.

The project will connect one million homes in Spain and 4500 municipalities. 160 applications have been submitted by 15 service providers for the project. The government has processed 52 of them positively.

To be part of the program, Interested service providers can submit their application of interest for particular areas published on the website of the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures and wait for approval and compete to receive subsidies. The deadline to present their application is from Tuesday, May 23 to Thursday, June 22, 2023.
