Tech Mahindra strikes partnership for private 5G to unlock Industry 4.0

Indian IT firm Tech Mahindra has started collaboration with businesses and operators for private 5G networks, which are set to unlock Industry 4.0 use cases.

“We have executed deployments in collaboration with telcos and enterprises, bringing advanced Industry 4.0 use cases to life. We have worked with automotive manufacturing facilities to enable connected robotics and real-time analytics that improve productivity and quality,” Amol Phadke, chief transformation officer, Tech Mahindra, said.

IT has also struck up a partnership with firms to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-equipped solution for enterprises.

What is Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 refers to the digital transformation of the manufacturing sector, which involves leveraging AI, human-machine interaction, and the use of robotics.

Private 5G or captive non-public networks (CNPN) are expected to deliver high-speed, ultra-low latency connectivity to enterprises that will allow carriers to generate revenues via new business models.

But India’s lack of return on investment makes it doubtful for high-level implementation of the technology. But there’s an upbeat mood in the world’s third-largest telecommunications sector.

“Although the initial momentum has been slow, primarily due to regulatory complexities and spectrum allocation issues, we anticipate that adoption will speed up as businesses become more aware of the ROI associated with digital transformation,” a Tech Mahindra executive stated.

Tech Mahindra said that private 5G will have large-scale applications in manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. The impediments are the lack of spectrum availability and having to rely on legacy IT systems.
