The 5G speed in the US has been a hot topic to discuss and an area of fierce contest between the top operators. But despite nationwide expansion and upgrade plus C-band deployments, it seems only hard for the competing telcos to mount a challenge to the speed king T-Mobile, at least that’s what the latest report from Ookla highlights. Here’s the data for the fastest 5G speed in the US.
According to the latest Ookla, an internet checking platform, T-Mobile continues to lead the 5G speed rank in the US as AT&T and Verizon try their best.
Ookla says that the speed boost is attributable to recent mid-band spectrum allocations. However, as Verizon makes gains in catching up with “un-carrier” T-Mobile, AT&T seems to be in dire need of renewed efforts in the game.
T-Mobile is the fastest 5G speed network in the US
This owes to the telco’s continuous efforts. In March 2024, the telco upgraded its mid-band 5G network which saw its average speed jump to 287.14 Mbps from 257.5 Mbps in a month. That left Verizon’s 224.67 Mbps and AT&T’s 145.36 Mbps far at bay.
The following month in May 2024, T-Mo’s speed fell to 275.50 Mbps but that was still enough to stay ahead among the lot. In the meantime, Verizon had its 5G speed rise to 215.57 Mbps at the end of 2023 from the paltry 133.56 Mbps in June 2023.
T-Mobile has deployed 5G Standalone (SA) networks and offers six carrier aggregation (CA) which only contributes further to better its 5G speed across the country. Additionally, the spectrum it has at its disposal from US Cellular’s wireless operation acquisition positions it fairly better to expand services to more rural America.

Lead in 5G video and gaming quality of experience
In 5G video and gaming qualify of experience, T-Mobile attained a score of 83 as Verizon managed 81 in June 2024. AT&T though took rested third with 76 during the same period. The stats highlight T-Mo’s consistently improving performance and maintaining its lead atop.
The above graph highlights that T-Mobile has been consistent in providing better video and gaming experiences to users than its competitors. Verizon, while maintaining a second rank, AT&T leaves quite a lot to desire.
As it seems, T-Mobile looks solid as the fastest 5G speed provider in the US for now and the next few months at least.
The mid-band spectrums have greatly benefited US telcos and customers with improved 5G speeds. But to catch up and topple T-Mo, Verizon and AT&T will need to make major improvements or so as it seems.
