Vietnam approves license for Starlink satellites to operate

Vietnam has approved a license for SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet services to operate in the country. This brings the US-based company’s satellite connectivity to the country, which is expected to bridge the digital divide.

The Ministry of Science and Technology granted Starlink Services Vietnam company licenses for fixed and mobile satellite networks. It has also received approvals from the Radio Frequency Department for airwaves and radio equipment.

The approval allows Starlink to legally build transmission and reception infrastructure in Vietnam without interfering with existing wireless communication systems. Local science and technology departments have been notified to coordinate oversight in line with national regulations.

Starlink has not yet announced an official rollout date.

In April 2025, the company was issued a pilot license to operate its service in the country. It is the first foreign company to test satellite internet in the country. After it established a company, it has also received a fully commercial license.

However, SpaceX hasn’t disclosed an official timeline for its commercial rollout of Starlink services in Vietnam.

Vietnam seeks to promote digital inclusion with Starlink satellite internet

Vietnam plans to leverage Starlink’s satellite constellation to introduce connectivity in the underserved areas. By bringing modern satellite connection, areas where fiber and telecom companies can’t reach will also get voice and data services. The officials say that the service will complement ground-based networks in remote and island regions.

Doan Quang Hoan, vice chairman of the Radio-Electronics Association of Vietnam, states that satellite internet will fill the coverage gap in Vietnam. However, he said that the existing telecom market will be minimal as the coverage gap is very small and is limited to areas where traditional services can’t reach.

SpaceX has 600,000+ satellites and will soon provide full-fledged internet services in Vietnam.
