Spain-based telecom giant Telefonica has called it quits with Huawei’s 5G equipment in Spain and Germany to adhere to the local regulations. But the company has given continuity with the Chinese manufacturer’s gears in Brazil.
“In both Germany and Spain, we are reducing our exposure to Huawei following the rules we have in these countries,” Chief Operating Officer (CFO) Emilio Gayo told Reuters on Wednesday.
This is the latest setback to Huawei from a Western country regarding the pullout from its telco infrastructure. The company has come under heavy scrutiny in the US and the entire Western bloc over its telecom gear over fears of data access and espionage. These allegations haven’t been proved yet, though.

Telefonica to pull out of Huawei 5G gear in Spain and Germany
In both Spain and Germany, Telefonica will phase out Huawei-manufactured devices in its core 5G networks. Gayo adds that also in Britain, where Huawei equipment is banned, “we have a very, very low exposure to Huawei.”
The company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Marc Murtra, said that the company ensures strict standards on equipment from every provider it deals with and prioritizes security for both the company and its customers.
