Rogers Satellite launches in Canada with data for WhatsApp

SpaceX has started rolling out commercial cellular Starlink service through Rogers carrier network. The direct-to-cell technology allows the telco users to stay connected even in places with no mobile coverage via Starlink satellite constellations high above in the sky.

“We’re proud to be the first and only provider in the country to offer this ground-breaking technology so Canadians can stay connected,” said Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri.

Rogers Satellite in Canada

Initially, Rogers Satellite started in a beta phase in July, allowing users to send text messages via satellite network. But with the beginning of the commercial rollout, users get satellite data for select mobile apps such as Google Maps, WhatsApp, X, AccuWeather, etc. Users can also use Starlink data on the hiking app CalTopo. You can notice that it’s a pretty obvious effort to enhance users’ safety during possible difficult times, where users can connect with emergency dispatchers or with their family and friends.

“On December 9, app capability is available on compatible Google Pixel and Samsung devices. Support for select iPhone models coming soon,” the telco shared on its website.

Users can make video calls on WhatsApp using Rogers Satellite. The data volume is deducted from their current data pack.

“Rogers Satellite is open to anyone, from any carrier, with a compatible device,” the carrier added, noting the satellite connectivity can operate through a second SIM card in a phone’s eSIM. “You can keep your existing plan with your current provider and sign up for a Rogers Satellite plan.”

Going forward, the company said that “Rogers Satellite will expand next to support data and voice services,” and not just data support for select apps.

When there’s no cellular network, smartphone users can resort to WiFi Calling; however, satellite connectivity takes that to a new dimension. The network capability is provided via satellites orbiting in the sky.

Price and discount

Rogers Satellite is available to users for free for twelve months on plans- Essentials ($45, $50), Popular ($60), and Ultimate ($80) plans. If you are eager, you can buy one for $15 per month. According to the operator, users who participated in the beta trial will get a $5 per month discount for the first year.

The telco also added that it will enable “satellite-to-mobile for IoT businesses” through SpaceX. “Applications include fleet and asset tracking along remote highways and rail corridors, as well as powering automated sensors for sectors like forestry and mining,” Rogers said.

The company expects that the launch of satellite service will also help promote enterprises and government agencies beyond regular users.
