The research and development in the transmission speed will continue to demonstrate eye-popping results. In the latest case, we have Rakuten Mobile and Nokia successfully demonstrating 1 Tbps transmission speed over a single wavelength on an 820 km subsea cable and terrestrial optical line in the telco’s home country Japan.
This trial used Nokia’s sixth-generation super-coherent Photonic Service Engine (PSE-6s) optics to communicate data over a Nokia DWDM line system. The demonstration highlighted the capability of providing ultra-high-speed transmission rates over long distances.
Rakuten Mobile and Nokia lauds the trial
Hiroshi Takeshita, a deputy CTO of Rakuten Mobile said, “We are delighted to achieve 1 Tbps per channel on our optical network in collaboration with our technical partner Nokia. This technical milestone enables us to optimize the utilization of fiber capacity and enhance power efficiency and the increased capacity empowers Rakuten Mobile to meet the demands of bandwidth-intensive mobile services and high-capacity enterprise requirements. This accomplishment is in line with Rakuten Mobile’s network growth objectives.”

James Watt, a senior vice president and general manager of the Optical Networks business at Nokia, said: “We are proud to have accomplished this remarkable 1 Tbps single wavelength transmission record in partnership with Rakuten Mobile. Our PSE-6s super-coherent optics deliver exceptional scalability, peak performance, and energy efficiency, allowing Rakuten Mobile to meet its carbon neutrality objectives and increase network capacity to meet the demand for high-bandwidth 5G services and enterprise needs.”
The trial also unlocked doors for Rakuten Mobile to further improve its network capacity. Using Nokia’s PSE coherent technology, the telco can improve spectrum efficiency and capacity per fiber pair. Nokia says that its latest PSE system offers 25% better per fiber capacity than earlier generation coherence fiber.
