Orange launches 8 Gbps fiber internet in Poland

European telecom giant Orange has launched 8 Gbps fiber broadband internet service after upgrading the network’s system to XGS-PON. This ultra-high-speed broadband service enables faster download, streaming, 4k/8k video consumption as well as more responsive smart home utilities.

The ultra-high-speed broadband service is available to over 830,000 households in Warsaw and Krakow. Going forward, Orange seeks to extend the 8 Gbps FTTH service to more cities.

The popular broadband provider said that its fiber internet service is already subscribed by over 1.3 million customers. With the modern-day internet requiring faster server response, the company says that most of its subscribers are on faster internet packages. The ultra-high-speed internet will unlock high-quality online gaming, video streaming, and virtual reality (VR) experiences. “We plan to cover nearly 2 million households with the new offer by the end of the year,” Orange Polska said in a statement.

XGS-PON is a next-generation technology in data transmission with a maximum download capability of 10 Gbps and an upload capacity of 1 Gbps. Orange said that for its users to really leverage such high speed, they would need to have a 10 Gbps port installed on their computers.

The company maintains that since 2015, it has spent over PLN 4 billion in expanding fiber network infrastructure in the country. The project of connecting cities and less connected areas has also got the push with EU funding.
