AI giant OpenAI has announced a free ChatGPT subscription for users in India for a year. Users can buy a subscription from November 04, 2025. The move will help the company hook more users to its platform and grow its user base amidst fierce AI market competition in the country.
The US-based AI company brought the affordable ChatGPT Go in India in August, and it starts at just Rs 399.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT of OpenAI, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI,” because the company saw a very positive response from Indian users.
With the rollout of the free subscription, OpenAI seeks to stamp a stronger footprint in the growing market of India.
ChatGPT Go is an affordable version of ChatGPT that gives users access to GPT-5, allowing image generation, file uploads, etc. It doesn’t offer legacy models access, video creation, etc. But provides value to users who want to enhance their user experience with AI.

OpenAI’s Benefits from Free ChatGPT Go for Indian Users
Decision to provide free ChatGPT Go for Indian users marks a different business approach for the American company in the South Asian country. Despite a possible smaller margin in the short term, it could prove to be a milestone decision that should help achieve higher user engagement and subscription.
In particular, as Google’s Gemini AI comes to the front with its own promotions, OpenAI’s affordable plan could allow it to keep the contest at bay.
On a side note, India’s telco giant Reliance is planning to launch BharatGPT chatbot. But before that materializes, the country will welcome and benefit from foreign AI services.
