Jio, Airtel, BSNL start cross-network HD voice service

India’s Jio, Airtel, and BSN have unveiled a cross-network HD voice service, allowing users to utilize a foreign network to call when they lose the original telco’s signals. The feature enables users to seamlessly connect when their own network suffers an outage or inconsistent coverage.

There’s no official confirmation of the network-free voice being officially launched by either of the telcos. However, the development clearly hints at the rollout of the service officially sooner than later.

Jio, Airtel enable Cross-Network HD voice service

There are wide suggestions that Jio and Airtel have unlocked inter-operator HD voice service. So far, on-net meaning, Jio-Jio and Airtel-Airtel service has been possible. But the inter-operator voice calling in HD quality is quite transformational.

In India, VoLTE has grown into a mainstream telecom technology available to a wide users. The latest rollout of cross-network HD voice further extends the high-quality call service to the millions in the world’s third-largest telco market.

India’s Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently announced the launch of the Inter-Circle Roaming (ICR) service. He said, “This is a key milestone, with BSNL, Airtel, and Reliance collaborating to use each other’s infrastructure at DBN-funded sites. With nearly 27,836 such locations, we’re not only ensuring better connectivity but also giving customers the freedom to choose their network provider across the country.”

Cross-network voice promotes ‘connectivity inclusion’

The cross-network HD voice eliminates gaps in India’s connectivity issues. More particularly, it removes disconnection arising from the home network’s poor signals or non-existence in rural and remote parts of India. With inter-operator HD voice, Jio, Airtel, and BSNL users can seamlessly connect and call using each other’s network when their own shows low to no signals. It’s also helpful for the residents, professionals, students, tourists, and travelers to stay connected regardless of their primary network.

Likewise, being an HD voice service means users can enjoy clear and high-quality sound while conversing on their phones.

Besides bringing innovative technologies, India is also promoting self-reliance for 4G and 5G. Therefore, the coming years will be full of challenges, opportunities, and benefits for India’s humongous telecommunications market.
