Huawei and Vodafone trial world’s first GL 900 MHz dynamic spectrum, delivers 20% higher throughput

Huawei and Vodafone Group have successfully tested the world’s first trial of GSM/LTE (GL) 900 MHz dynamic spectrum sharing on the telco’s commercial networks. The group’s Networks Centre of Excellence team and Huawei Mobile Innovation Center completed the testing in the Black Coast city of Trabzon.

The two giants have collaborated on such milestone projects before. In 2022, Huawei and Vodafone achieved higher strides within the 900 MHz spectrum band. The latest test proves that the frequencies could be assigned dynamically. The test demonstrated that spectrum, for instance, 900 MHz can be issued between 4G and 2G services if the demand emerges.

The test which lasted several months enabled Vodafone Turkey to offer up to 10 MHz 4G capacity and speed effectively. 4G KPIs exhibited enhancements in network performance and improved user experience. Do read: Vodafone UK begins O-RAN deployment

Upon the test, Mallik Rao, Vodafone Turkey’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “Spectrum is an extremely precious asset. This new network optimization technique improves spectral efficiency and enhances the experience of Vodafone customers.”

Ying Weimin, President of Huawei Wireless Network Research & Development, said: “We are glad to have tested GL 900MHz dynamic spectrum sharing on Vodafone Turkey’s commercial networks, and to have achieved satisfying performance results in the past few months. Huawei is dedicated to offering technical innovations to secure our customers’ business success.”

The test showed that download and upload speed improved by 20%.
