Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched the VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) service, which enables phone calls without mobile networks. The service, aka WiFi Calling, is launched in select regions, which will soon expand to more areas. Here, we detail how to activate BSNL VoWiFi and its benefits.
How to activate BSNL VoWiFi and the requirements
To activate BSNL VoWiFi, you need to find and check WiFi Calling or VoWiFi under Connections or Network and Internet in your phone’s Settings. Whether Android or iPhone, the steps are similar.
In addition, you also need a compatible 4G phone and a 4G SIM card for this. All smartphones these days come with 4G compatibility, and you should also have a 4G BSNL SIM card. Also, remember that when you are trying to make a WiFi Call, your phone should be connected to WiFi.
You may also need to update your phone to its latest OS rollout to get the VoWiFi feature on your phone. But there is no need for extra hardware or third-party software required for the service.
In short, you need the following to use BSNL’s VoWiFi service:
- A compatible smartphone
- 4G SIM (has to be VoLTE supported)
- The device must be updated to the latest OS update
- WiFi connection with the internet
VoWiFi technology provides an HD voice service. It allows users to make a call using a WiFi network even in areas where there is no mobile tower or signal.

BSNL says that its VoWiFi service is completely free to use. At the moment, the service is available in the South and West zone circles where the telco is expanding its 4G service. The service will go all-India very soon.
