Bahrain has become the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to bring satellite-powered direct-to-device (D2D) services that establish connectivity to smartphones from space.
The service allows smartphone users to always stay connected, whether they are in the middle of the sea or a desert with no cellular coverage.
The milestone happened after the release of a consultant report, which forms a key pillar of the TRA’s broader strategy to position Bahrain as a global leader in connectivity and digital innovation.”

The country’s telco regulator, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), says that D2D ensures communication 24x,7 “enhancing safety, resilience, and connectivity for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.”
“Satellite Direct-to-Device services represent a significant advancement in Bahrain’s telecommunications ecosystem,” stated Philip Marnick, General Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. “By being the first country in the GCC to authorize this technology, we are reinforcing Bahrain’s position as a leader in digital connectivity and innovation. This initiative ensures that people remain connected even beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, supporting safety, economic activity, and national resilience, while reflecting our continued commitment to providing world-class telecommunications services.”
However, the authority hasn’t mentioned which specific operators will be providing satellite-inspired services. But this may be up to the operators to announce the groundbreaking service and promote it.
Users won’t need a dedicated device to avail of the D2D services. It works on phones that support satellite connectivity and allows for voice and messaging or emergency SOS services. The basic idea is to ensure basic communications when terrestrial networks are not available.
The service will roll out in phases as the government, regulator, and operators see how the network delivers on its promises before going fully commercial.
