Airtel Africa and SpaceX to expand satellite internet on the continent

Airtel Africa has reached an agreement with SpaceX for Starlink satellite internet on the continent. The partnership seeks to bolster connectivity and bridge the digital gap for millions of users using Elon Musk’s low-earth orbit satellites.

SpaceX will connect many underserved areas on the continent. More in particular, it will be able to introduce connectivity in areas that have no access to traditional infrastructures of cellular towers.

So far, SpaceX has licenses in nine of 14 African nations. When current regulatory proceedings succeed, Airtel will leverage SpaceX satellites to connect remote and mainstream areas on the continent.

“This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step in demonstrating our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships,” said Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa.

Airtel seeks to use SpaceX’s satellite constellation to connect schools, government offices, businesses, etc. By doing this, the company will broaden the continent’s communication reach beyond carrier coverage.

“We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways,” stated Chad Gibbs, Vice President at Starlink Business Operations, SpaceX.

Both firms will also work on expanding Airtel’s infrastructure across the continent by studying how the telco’s towers can be used to roll out satellite services.
