Samsung expands satellite connectivity in US, Japan

Samsung has announced the expansion of satellite communication across select smartphones, including the recently launched Galaxy S26 series. The service is coordinated through its partnership with operators in North America and Japan.

Samsung says that since the world is growing more reliant on AI, the need for connectivity has become more pronounced. The satellite connectivity allows users to connect even when there are no mobile networks around. So, it’s useful in rescue and emergency situations where traditional fiber and cellular services are offline or not available.

“Samsung has a rich legacy in wireless communication technologies, and we strive to be at the forefront of innovation in this space through open collaboration with global partners,” said Won-Joon Choi, President, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Head of the R&D Office, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. “As satellite connectivity becomes an important part of the mobile landscape, we are committed to ensuring Galaxy users have reliable access to communication, especially when they need it most.”

Samsung started satellite services on Galaxy phones, starting with the Galaxy A series devices. The company has shared that it continues to expand the service across a wider number of models.

The South Korean tech giant says that it will unlock satellite services on phones “in phases based on regional network availability and regulatory requirements”. It unlocks messaging and data services to users.
