Vumatel reaches 1 million milestone with fiber

Vumatel, the largest fiber network operator from South Africa, has amassed over 1 million fiber customers. The milestone reflects the service providers’ commitment to reliable customer services and the trust in it shown by the paying subscribers.

In a statement, the company said that reaching north of 1 million users is a major milestone for the country’s telecommunications sector.

“What started as a grassroots project in the streets of Parkhurst has surged into a nationwide digital revolution,” it said. “Today, Vuma stands as a titan of transformation, having successfully bridged the digital divide and turned a bold vision into a reality for a million households.”

The company also noted its evolutionary growth and contribution to bridging the digital divide. The fiber network had early adoption in metro areas; however, recently, there has been a strong adoption trajectory in previously underserved communities.

Vuma said that the figures simply showed that, besides the number, they now declare that world-class connectivity is a necessity, not a luxury.

Vuma’s 1 million fiber customer milestone is part of a long-term strategy

“Reaching one million subscribers is a major milestone for Vuma and a strong validation of our long-term strategy,” said Maziv Chief Executive Officer Dietlof Mare.

“It reflects the growing importance of fiber as essential infrastructure and the success of our close collaboration with Internet service provider (ISP) partners.”

It took Vuma eight years to reach beyond 1 million customers on its fiber network. To compare, its ADSL service had taken a mammoth 14 years to reach the same feat. It reflects a much faster adoption of fiber networks. And it’s pretty obvious too, given that a fiber network provides a much faster data rate, reliability, and is less costly in long-term maintenance. We even have scientists planning to lay fiber on the moon.

“The surge in adoption — especially within our Reach communities — proves that when you provide quality, affordable access, people seize the opportunity,” Vuma Chief Commercial Officer Simon Butler said.
