Commercial 5G begins in Sri Lanka

Commercial 5G rollout has begun in Sri Lanka with Dialog Axiata PLC and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel), taking the lead for the country’s next-gen cellular revolution.

The launch of the next-gen network means users now get much faster data speeds on their smartphones, with wide-ranging industrial applications at their disposal too. Besides 5G advantages, including faster speed, users also get low-latency, much smoother gaming, AR/VR, streaming, etc. It transforms the whole internet experience while unlocking new use cases.

SLT-Mobitel launched 5G at One Galle Face Mall in Colombo. SLT Group Chairman Mothilal De Silva said that the advanced technology enables faster data services and supports wider adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based services.

Likewise, Dialog rolled out 5G Ultra services with over 220 live 5G sites, boasting already 1.5 million subscribers. The telco has a 29 million mobile subscription. “By leveraging both 3500 MHz spectrum for wide-area mobile coverage and 27 GHz spectrum for high-capacity, gigabit-speed use cases, Dialog is uniquely positioned to support future-ready consumer and enterprise applications,” the operator said.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) had recently allocated 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band to Dialog Axiata and SLT Mobitel, and a license for 200 MHz of airwaves in the 27 GHz band to Dialog Axiata.
