China Telecom subsidiary grabs 6G satellite terrestrial patent

A China Telecom subsidiary has retained a national invention patent for 6G satellite-terrestrial integration technology. The telco could leverage it to achieve an edge in the next-generation telecommunication service.

The company expects that the patent could lay the groundwork to build a fully connected “space-air-ground-sea” network in the near future. The patent can be best translated as “A Method for 6 G-Based Integrated Space-Air-Ground Transmission Optimization and Topographic Mapping”. It’s seen as vital for the 6G satellite-terrestrial integration technology.

In recent times, satellite technology has become more popular. And while it is still expensive for regular residential users, research and innovation could lower their price in the years to come to enable their easier access to most. And China Telecom seeks to stay competitive in this race.

In its “6G Satellite Communication Access and Networking Technology” research, the telco has proposed a backward-compatible practice that uses the ground network to enhance satellite communication services. a national project.

6G is the successor to 5G and is seen to exceed the capacity of the current standard in terms of both speed and latency. So far, South Korea, India, the US, and some Western states have made some progress in 6 G. But China Telecom’s seizing of the patent comes at a critical time as states and vendors are all formulating strategies and standards for 6G.

Wang Zhiqin, head of the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group that promotes 6G and international cooperation in China, has shared that the research for 6G technical standards will begin in Jun, 2025. He also said that the technical research will be complete by 2027.
